From Act Three, Scene Two
LEE
When was the last time I went to an amusement park? I can’t even tell you.
EVERELLE
The last time I went to one, was right after Frank—my husband--left us. I took the,,,kids to try to take their mind off it.
LEE
You didn’t deserve to have that happen to you.
EVERELLE
Maybe I didn’t and maybe I did. It happened anyway so I just have to live with it.
(Brightens)
But that was a long time ago, right? Tonight I’m in another world.
Lee takes her free hand and spins her around playfully.
LEE
A world where anything can happen. Tell me your dreams.
EVERELLE
What dreams? All my dreams got knocked out of me long time ago.
LEE
That sounds sad. I’m not gonna let you be sad. So don’t talk like that. You never stop dreaming.
EVERELLE
Sheuh…you think just cause you young and pretty you can get this ole tea kettle to start boiling again? Takes more than a pretty face and a smooth tongue.
LEE
I AM more than that. So what do you still dream about?
EVERELLE
(Musing)
Do I have any dreams left? Do I?
(Considers)
Well…I do wanna see Hope Victoria graduate from college. That’s a dream. Does that count?
LEE
That’s a dream you have for your daughter. But you must have something you dream about doing yourself. I refuse to leave this park until you tell me at least one dream you have. Right now.
EVERELLE
You’re annoying, you know that?
LEE
I’m not annoying.
Everelle takes one last
bite from the candy cane
before throwing it away.
She turns and faces him.
EVERELLE
Okay. Don’t laugh at me.
(Pause)
I wanna know what it’s like to be madly in love. My Frank was a decent man most of the time. I mean, we had a good time, we had a family together. I’m sure I felt love for him at times, and he felt love for me at times. But it was never that. Never fire and ice and hot butter and your heart racing on the wind. So yeah, that’s my dream.
LEE
Well well well…
Moves to her and takes her by the waist.
LEE (Cont.)
I’m here to tell you that’s a dream you can still have come true…
He kisses her. Momentarily reluctant, she gives in to it for a moment, then pulls away.
EVERELLE
I’m sorry. I need to think about this.
LEE
I understand. Take some time to think. Just don’t think too long.
