The play is about language, about these particular African American women—PRISONER, SISTER SISTER, MAD CONVICT and LESBIAN AVENGER- who attempt to wield or master language in order to triumph over the limitations of the physical world (whether imposed from within or from outside), to transform language into power, or “to speak truth to power”, but one doomed to failure by the nature of the power relations in which they partake. Their attempts take the form of vignettes interwoven into their prison life (what might be termed dreamscapes) featuring the INCARNATION OF PHILLIS WHEATLEY, SALLY HEMINGS, and FANNIE LOU HAMER. Whether nominally free or enslaved, all are severely restricted, and they attempt to use language to reduce these restrictions.
